NFB 2020 BELL Program

While we are living in unprecedented times, we know that the National Federation of the Blind has and will continue to meet the challenge of the times with hope, love, and determination. One of the commitments we made early in this COVID-19 pandemic was to provide resources for blind children and their families, and to support the teaching of critical nonvisual techniques and Braille literacy at home.

National Convention

The National Federation of the Blind National Convention is the largest gathering of blind people in the world.

What's New

Dr. Jacob Bolotin Awards

The Dr. Jacob Bolotin Awards honor individuals and organizations that are a positive force in the lives of blind people.

Dr. Jacob W. Bolotin (1888-1924) was the world’s first physician who was blind from birth. He achieved that goal despite the tremendous challenges faced by blind people in his time. Not only did he realize his own dream, but he also went on to support and inspire many others.

Summer Programs

The National Federation of the Blind and the country’s premier training centers for the blind offer a variety of summer programs for blind and low-vision children and young adults that build blindness skills and encourage independence.

Uber, Lyft, and Service Animals: The Discrimination Continues

Monday, April 13, 2020

After three years of implementation and monitoring, the National Federation of the Blind’s settlement agreements with Uber and Lyft are set to expire this summer. Progress has been difficult to measure, and discrimination by rideshare drivers against travelers with service animals continues.

Distance Education Resources

The National Federation of the Blind is committed to ensuring quality education for blind students, and to providing activities and lessons that are fun and educational for blind children and their families. When virtual education is necessary or encouraged, we want blind students to be able to continue learning alongside their sighted peers.

Legal Program

The National Federation of the Blind's extensive legal program has helped advance disability rights case law under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, creating more equitable workplaces, classrooms, and communities for blind Americans.
